🔍 SIGIR 2025 Paper Spotlight #3: Researching the Future of Professional Search

Last (but definitely not least!) in our SIGIR 2025 contributions series:
Doctoral Consortium Paper: "From Professional Search to Generative Deep Research Systems: How Can Expert Oversight Improve Search Outcomes?" 🏢💼
By Samy Ateia

With the rise of GenAI in professional search - from enterprise copilots to systematic reviews - one big question comes up:
Can we trust fully automated systems in high-stakes professional tasks, e.g., in biomedical research?
Fully autonomous GenAI may boost productivity - but without expert input, we risk inaccuracy, misalignment, and overreliance on generated content.

🧠 Samy's research is up to explore how expert feedback can be systematically integrated into GenAI-driven search pipelines to improve result quality for professional searchers.

🔍 Key directions include:
➡️Testing human-in-the-loop input for query formulation, relevance judgement, and information extraction
➡️Comparing human-guided vs. fully automated GenAI search systems
➡️Comparing human expert guidance vs. GenAI-simulated expert guidance in search systems
➡️Evaluating on systematic review and biomedical QA datasets

Looking forward to discussing how we can design more effective GenAI systems for professional search at SIGIR 2025! 🔍📚🏢
