Research interests
Genetic diseases of the proximal tubule of the kidney
Based on genetic kidney diseases in humans, we are trying to gain insights into the functioning of the proximal tubule of the kidney and to better understand the mechanisms of disease development.
We are particularly interested in protein reabsorption, intracellular vesicle transport, and signals originating from the mitochondria. Our kidney research is part of the collaborative research program of the TRR 374 (external link, opens in a new window).
Mechanisms of salt dependence of aldosterone production in the adrenal gland
The adjustment of salt excretion to salt intake through food is of paramount importance: long-term excessive salt excretion is life-threatening, but too little salt excretion can also have devastating consequences through the development of high blood pressure. The hormone aldosterone plays a key role in adapting salt excretion to salt intake by regulating sodium and potassium excretion. On the other hand, aldosterone secretion must be precisely adapted to requirements. In this project, we are investigating the mechanisms by which aldosterone secretion is adapted and the significance of the osmosis sensitivity of the adrenal gland itself in this process.
